Sarah Clutton

About the Book:

Alfie's Bains is a precocious almost-ten-year-old who sees the world in a unique way. Alfie was living with his single mother in Ireland, when Emilia had a health scare and admitted to Alfie she had an estranged family in Australia, whom they would soon be meeting.

When Penny Bains opens the door of her farmhouse in Northwest Tasmania to a boy with an Irish accent claiming to be the son of her missing daughter, Penny’s life is turned upside down.

Alfie discovers that someone in the tiny township of Beggars Rock is most likely his father and launches “Operation Tadpole” – a quest to discover his father’s identity. But Alfie soon discovers that the residents of Beggars Rock, and his newly found family members, are all staying silent. As Alfie starts to uncover secrets that his family would prefer to keep buried, he realises that no one is willing to tell him the truth.

A mystery and family drama recommended for those who loved Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and The Rosie Project, this warm-hearted novel has been described as “unforgettable, funny, life affirming and deeply moving”. It is a story about the secrets that form us, the family ties that bind us and a precocious boy who forces the adults in his life to reckon with the past.
